Treasure hunting (Summer learning journey)

LI: To collect materials needed to successfully complete our weekly superpower building missions with Nano girl.

This week we began our first task of the summer learning task. We had to get items from a video and thought about if we had to right items from it. We worked in groups which gave us the opportunity to think about what we were gonna make with the items we had. This was a fun task because since our school are not holiday we got to work other people from other classes.

Operation Christmas drop

LI: To write a summary of the story behind the Operation Christmas Drop in your own words.
For the last 68 years the men and women of the US air force who are based at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam have been using a pilot training drill to drop much needed supplies to the people who live on the 60 remote islands that surround Guam. In my opinion I think the idea of Operation Christmas Drop is good because it brings the community together and makes people happy, it also leaves the negative thing in the past.

This week for maths The year 8's were learning about how to use probability. We were given different questions that involved using probability to find the average or the complete answer. This was a really fun task because we got to work together in groups which then gave us more confidence to give each other feed back.

T.E.E.L Paragraph

TEEL Paragraph:

With my art I have chosen colours that represent a theme from the olden days. The different colours stand out but it gives out a angry and mysterious emotion. It also brings out a vibe where the painting wants to be in piece or wants some kind of revenge. It comes down to the popping of the colors and the shading of the clothing and the dark colours used in the painting. It tells other people that it wants to be alone with its knitting.

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?

LI: To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation, ‘Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that infomration to help us form an opinion that we could justify with evidence. I think that we should make masks compulsory because we are still in a time where we find traces of Covid19: A virus that spreads easily.

Law of inertia

L.I: To create a DLO that explains the law of inertia.

Science is really interesting, for science we were learning about the law of motion and who created it. The person who created law of motion is a man named Isaac Newton, he was a man who discovered it and explained what it meant. The law inertia means if an object stays in rest or stays at a constant speed this motion will keep on going until unless some type of pull of force stops the object or moves it. The thing that I really liked about this task is how we got to work in groups and share our own ideas to each other and get feedback.

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Imagine being a sea creature and seeing a piece of rubbish but not knowing what it is and eating it. So many people don't think when it comes to throwing their rubbish in the bin. Therefore if you don't throw your rubbish in the bin it will end up floating in the ocean for the next sea animal to suffer in pain.

Pollution can kill more than 50 thousand animals each year, as a result every 10 years around 500 thousand animals die. To prevent this from happening we need to use our brain and pick up any rubbish that's around you and put it in the bin. We have been so disrespectful and not knowing about our actions towards the sea animals, so we need to change the way we think right now.

Animals across the world are suffering from how much rubbish there is in the ocean, as a result turtles, seagulls and other sea animals will consume our rubbish or even get stuck in it because of our useless actions. There are bins for a reason, so it could keep our environment a safe place for our sea animals and birds.

But it's not just our actions that cause the risk of animals dying; it could be a volcanic eruption which its ashes can lead to sea creatures getting crushed by them and dieing. Pollution is a global problem which can affect our earth as well. Pollution can come from so many places like drains, rivers and strong currents that can carry all the rubbish that was in their waters and carries it into the ocean.

There are three main major types of pollution like air pollution, water pollution and land pollution so rubbish is basically everywhere. These three types of pollution can cause so much damage to our environment even ourselves, so this is why we need to stop polluting and think about the risk we are taking. Everyday at least 100 people die of pollution which is really bad for families and friends.

There are over 12 million tons of rubbish floating in our oceans every year. This must be a struggle for the animals in the ocean, and one day turtles, fish and other sea animals could go extinct from the way we are acting. Do you think we should carry on with throwing rubbish in the ocean, OF COURSE NOT we need to keep our oceans clean and safe and remember that it could cause big harm to us humans as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

L.I: To use transitional vocabulary

This week for writing we I learnt a lot about the world and the disaster about rubbish in our oceans. My explanation that I made explains to others the situation around the world and how we need to fix it. I really liked this task because it make everyone to think the way i think we need to so we can save sea animals. The thing that I really liked about this task is how we got to write about anything that the world is struggling on.

Who I will vote for

L.I:To decide which political party will get your vote by making an informed choice

To decide which political party I would vote for I read a summary of the policies each party wants to introduce should they win the election and the right to form a government to run NZ. Doing this allowed me to make an informed decision. If I was 18 I would vote for Labour because they are willing to upgrade hospitals so it could help people in Aotearoa with the virus. This means if Labour Won the election in my electorate Jenny Salesa would be our member of parliament and Jacinda ardern would become the Prime Minister.

In one of our learning sessions, we had learned the legal and illegal drugs. We had been given 6 scenario's(connected to drugs), which in groups, we had decided what the consequences would be. We had also learnt about the 3 different drug classes is when getting caught by the police. We were really shocked of about the amount of money and time was spent in prison. I really enjoyed this activity because it showed me the consequences of making bad choices.

Footprint Observations

Learning Intention: To make observations about the footprints

This week for science, we were learning about observations. An observation is the action of observing or watching the behavior of something. We decided to try to guess what happened by reading pictures, or trying to guess what happened by looking at the pictures. We had three different observations to guess. The first one had big prints, and little prints next to each other. We thought and guessed that it was a mother and it's baby. The second one had two different prints, crossing over each other, and the all going around in a circle. We thought they were fighting, or making a home. We finished and all agreed it was a fight, because only the big tracks were coming out, and not the little ones. The last one had the same except they both went into a circle, but didn't leave. We thought they both hurt themselves, or made a house, because the tracks didn't leave, but instead stayed there. We all agreed again, that they stayed the night there, and made a house. this activity was fun.

MRSCGREN

L.I: To understand the meaning behind the acronym MRSCGREN

Our body's has a lot of qualities and different features. This week we were learning about the qualities of different living things which is MRS C GREN. This means Movement, Respiration, sensitivity, cell, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrients. We had to explain the meaning of these different words and explain how the process works with living things. The thing that I liked about this task was how I got work in a group with my friends instead of explaining all those words.

Its cool to be ME!

Volleyball inter school

Volleyball inter school was amazing as our year 6, 7 and 8's got to compete in the volleyball inter school on a beautiful Wednesday morning. We took the bus all the way to Selwyn College with students who knew the rules reffing the games. When we got there the stadium was humongous with a total of 4 courts. At first we were nervous but as we got used to playing, our confidence started to build up, which got us to do more of spiking and serving over hand. We ended up winning 3 games and losing 3 which was really good. It showed that we improved on our skills over the past few weeks with spiking, receiving and serving the ball. The thing that I liked about this years volleyball inter school was how I got to play against other school with all my friends.

L.I: Is to understand how to code your robot with your own codes.

This week for tech we started on coding our robots to follow a black line. With this task we were getting taught how to make our own coding block which will follow a black line. With the creations of our own blocks we had to code them to move 4 directions. This was a fun experiment since it was following something by its self. We also coded the Mbot to stop when it encounters something in front of it.

Career pathway

L.I: To find out the qualities I need to become a Building and Construction Manager.

As people grow up they start to get older until they get a job, which we were talking about. This week  we were choosing our jobs by asking a lot of question and it will calculate the results and fit in all the jobs you could get in. The job that I chose was a Building and Construction Manager as you can see from my DLO. I had to look for the skills required to join and the things I need to learn. The thing that I liked about this task was how we got to look through the results of jobs we got.

Dance Class #1

This week for PE we started on a new sport which was dance. We were met with a new couch named Mrs Rebecca, which taught us all about different ways to dance. We then got given the topic which was me and my body and talked about how there was no right or wrong. The first task the we had to do was to just dance, but there was a twist. Once the music stopped we had to make the shape that Mrs Rebecca shouted out for an example a square, if she did then you could find a partner and do the shape or you can do it by yourself. She then put us into a group and did the same thing but every time the music stopped one group would do there letter going from a to z. This was a fun experiment because it was really fun dancing with our friends.

Life Education

L.I: To Learn new things in Life Ed

This week we had a special guest which was life ed. We talked all about how the brain works and the four walls of hauora. When learning new things in the life ed we were given a video to watch so we could give some advice that the main character could use when he is in a difficult situation. We also made a structure, so for every question that was good about Kapi we would put a block on top of the structure depending on which wall one of the 4 walls the question could fit in. We also talked about the brain and the amount of brain cells we produce. The thing that I liked about this was that we all got to meet Harold and that it was a fun last experiment meeting Nichole.

Summary about Science

LI: to find the most vital ideas from the information to help us answer the question “What is science?”.

This DLO is identifying the ideas of science which we have learnt from the information we have gained. To find the vital information, we negotiated by collaborating and communicating with our team. We shared our opinions and ideas, we took notes and from them we selected and rejected information to get to our final conclusion.

For us the 3 main vital ideas are:
Science is the discovery of What, Why, and How events happen
The three main branches of science are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
There are two main categories of science, and they are Basic and Applied Science.

Main Ideas

LI: to summarise the information.

This DLO is highlighting our summary about what we know about science. In our groups, we have been sharing our ideas on posted notes and found the key words which we then wrote a summary about what science is. To then create a summary about the topic. We needed to skim and scan for key vocabulary to create this DLO. We also had to join our ideas together to create a more efficient idea.

We used our new question dice to help us construct some questions we want to find more about. The three questions we made using the dices were:

When did science start?
How will science progress in the future?
Who was the first scientist?

Making connections to problem solving.

L.I: To explore problem solving.

As our internet stopped we decided to create our own tangrams. This is a puzzle that was created centuries ago, these puzzles were usually used for people that were on a ship to have something to entertain them self's. When playing with this puzzle you can make different kind of things into an animals or a shape. We started of with a piece of A4 paper and a pair of scissors. We had to follow and listen to simple instructions to create our own tangram, when finishing of the tangrams we were given a challenge to create a square out of the pieces of paper. The thing that I liked about this task was that it was a challenge to me and we got to use problem solving to fit in the pieces of paper to create your thing.

Negative Numbers

LI: To add and subtract positive and negative numbers.
For the start of term 3 for maths we learnt how to add positive and negative numbers. When adding negative numbers the number would decrease until it would get to a positive number or stay as it is, a negative number. The thing that was really fun about this task was that some of the question that we were given were really easy and hard at the same time. Another thing that I liked about this was that we got to work in a group with our friends.

10-5-7-10-10 Wiritng

Tonight is the night where all of the stars come out and say hi to the world. A man named James looked forward to this day and wanted to do his plan. His plan was to climb a very high mountain to watch all the stars. But this was no ordinary mountain, this mountain was some sort of cliff. He knew he could do this since he was a professional rock climber. This took him a little while to climb up since it was very big.

The sun was about to set at exactly 6:00, one by one the stars will start to shine up the whole world. He started to climb faster and faster. It was currently 5:00 and he started to stress out. This was his only time to feel the feeling that he wanted to feel when he looked at the stars on a mountain with his Grandma. Time was ticking it got closer and closer to 6:00.

As he was having doubts in himself, he looked up and saw the edge of the cliff so he didn't give up. He went as fast as he could to the top. He could sense relief in himself, and as he got up it was  beautiful. getting there at a time of 5:59. He layed down on his bag looking up thinking about his grandma. As the stars started to appear and cried in joy as the stars wrose above him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week for writing we did 5-7-10 but instead of doing this we added more steps and minutes which is 10-5-7-10-10. This would help us plan and do other stuff. The thing that we really need was time to plan. Out planning time was 10 minutes and the extra 10 minutes at the end is to fix up you writing piece. This was really helpful because we had more time to think about what we are writing and the amount of time we have been given to our writing.

5-7-10 Writing

That was the question that occupied their frightened minds as they crouched, huddling together, next to the pile of dusty sacks on the base of the windmill. This all began on a cloudy day, to where 4 people were on a hike up a mountain. The weather today there was supposed to be a thunderstorm but they didn't believe that as the forecast was always wrong around there area.

So as they were heading up the mountain they saw a big dark grey cloud coming towards them so they decided to go back. As they were heading back it started to rain buckets. They thought to them self's that they wouldn't make it in time so they stumbled into a windmill, and as they were entering a big lightning struck the ground, frightening them and went straight in.

The 4 friends huddled to keep warm and tried to ring someone but no one had service so they rested until the storm stopped. 2 of the friends could as they could constantly hearing the lightning. As they were resting the storm started to settled down an they woke up and took of back home.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Currently it has been the start of a new term for school and to start of, we worked on writing. We were set a task where we would get a partner and spend 5 minutes to wright as much as you can with the topic that you were given. Then with your partner you would have 7 minutes each to share our work and give feedback on what should change. With 10 you would get 10 minutes to rewrite your story with more detail and use the feedback that your partner gave to you.

Tech (Robotics)

L.I: Is to code your mbot to follow a more advance obstacle course.

Today was our last day of robotics at tamaki college, after this we would be rotating to cooking. Mrs Ferguson gave us a challenge to make the mbot follow a course. At the end all of us got to do the whole course. The fun thing about this was that we had a competition on who's mbot could do the course the fastest. I ended up coming second with the time of 31.86 seconds and coming in first place was Florence with the time of 31.32 seconds and in third was Sakshi with the time of 32.38 seconds.

Navigation by the Stars

L.I: Is to understand how to use the Matariki stars.

Matariki is a really fascinating event where the 7 stars come out. These stars weren't only for show they were also there for navigation. These stars were used for over 100 years, these were used to know which way was west south and all that. These stars are so unique in some way of form where our ancestors used them.

How does a periscope works?

L.I: Is to explain how a periscope works.

Mr Johnston came and taught us what periscopes are, and how they are used and who uses them. We found out that the angel of incidents = angel of reflection. That means if the light hits the mirror at a 45 degrees it reflects the light back at 45 degrees. I found this fun because I got to learn so much fun things about what a periscope does and I actually got to work one.

Tragedy at Tangiwai

L.I: Is to Understand the story about the Tragedy At Tangiwai.

A book which was about New Zealand was so neat I learnt a lot about it. The things that I learnt about this story (Tragedy at Tangiwai) is that there was a big disaster there. As Christmas eve was arriving there was a horrible crash that happened and a lot of people survived and also some passed. This train was heading to Auckland from Wellington. But a man named Cyril Ellis was so brave and did his best to save as many people as possible with the help of William Inglils.

Tech (Robotics)

L.I: Is to understand how to sense a mbot.

As for term 2 for tech we started to make a mbots sense. With coding we had to make the mbot avoid hitting somebody or something. We had to use a variety of codes to make it, but we had some clues from Mrs Ferguson but it was just the parts and then we had to figure out how to place it together. When we got there we were so surprised and proud of our self's because it was really neat because of how robots can work. this we

Cityscape of Rio De Janeiro

L.I: Is to write a description of my Cityscape using preposition.
Not many people know that Rio really means January River, or that  the river is actually a bay! The most prominent features of Rio is Christ The Redeemer, also one of the 7 wonders of the world, and is on the right of my cityscape. The wonderful towers on the left of Christ the Redeemer is the Municipal Theatre which is an opera house in the Centro district of this country. Did you know that Rio is home to the biggest urban forest in the world? If you take the time to look at this wonderful statue of Christ The Redeemer, sometimes you would wonder how long would of it take to build the beautiful statue. With my painting I used warm colors because I wanted to try go for a sun set because I thought that would look really neat with my cityscape. I also mixed red and yellow with made kind of a faded orange then added white to make it more lighter and for the bottom bit I mixed purple and red to make pink colour, and I was so proud of it on how it turned out.

Lerna's Hydra

LI: To understand the exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication.
As for maths we started to understand how to use exponents. Exponents is a type of maths problem says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. Most of these questions were really difficult but the strategie that I used was really helpful and got me to getting all of the question correct. The thing that I liked about this task was that it was a challenge and was really easy.

Tech (Robotics)

LI: To learn the basics of how to code an mbot.

As it is currently level 2 of the lock down we carried on like it was like a normal school day and went to tech at Tamaki College. For tech we had a new subject which was robotics and our teacher for today was Miss Ferguson. With robotics we were given a mbot which is a type of coding robot. Mbot can do all sorts of things like move in different shapes and move forwards and backwards. First we learn the basics of how to code an Mbot. The movements that we had to put in out Mbot was to make it move into a square which is not hard. We had to precisely get it to move at a 90* angle then do it again until it reaches its starting point. Then at the end of your coding to make it more interesting we had to make a victory dance when it reaches the end so it can be proud of its self for making it.

Poems have been around for so long, like over 500 years old. Well I made a poem talking about my Ancestors. For my poem I added some power full words like, my ancestors gave me the strength to be the person who I am right now. When writing my poem I thought about my culture and the cultural things that we do in Niue .Sometimes whenever I read these I feel so many emotions inside me just from reading my own poem.

Ta'ovala is a traditional skirt which is worn in Tonga for all genders. For maths we had been given a maths question which was really simple for us. In this maths question we had to figure out the the amount of meters of materials it took to make one Ta'ovala. We had to work in partners which my partner was Lukah, I really think that Lukah and I worked well because we had the same thinking which I really liked

L.I: Is to find the most affection way to solve a strategies.
This week for maths I had to make a google drawing to solve a really simple equation. This question was kind of tricky but at the end I got there. I worked with Chris, which was the best choice since we both had the same ideas about the question. We also included the rule which was Multiplying the number by three then subtracting 1 from it.

Koukouratata

This week for maths I had to make a DLO explaining the strategy I used to solve this equation. This was a really fun challenge to do since it got my brain going. I would sometimes not get it but at the end I got there. The thing that I liked about this task was that I could work with my friends, making use communicate on things that we got confused with and combine our knowledge to find the answer.
